Arkansas City is located in the state's Delta Region, about 115 miles southeast of Little Rock and 75 miles southeast of Pine Bluff. Situated near the Mississippi River and on the Great River Road National Scenic Byway, Arkansas City is irrevocably tied to the Mighty Mississippi. Before 1927, the Mississippi River flowed mere yards from the main business district; now the Great River is found a mile to the east of the community.
The proud county seat of Desha County, Arkansas City has several properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places, including the restored Desha County Courthouse.
Arkansas City is the hometown of John H. Johnson, patriarch of Johnson Publishing Company and publisher of Jet and Ebony magazines. Founded in 1942, Johnson Publishing Company became the largest Black-owned publishing company in the United States. Arkansas City is now home to the John H. Johnson Museum and tells the story of Johnson's success and preserves his legacy for future generations.
Because of its proximity to the Mississippi River, Arkansas City offers a variety of outdoor recreational activities. Bird-watchers, in particular, can enjoy numerous spotting opportunities in the surrounding countryside such as Choctaw Island, recognized by the Audubon Society as an “Important Birding Area.”

Arkansas City is the hometown of John H. Johnson (1918–2005), a black icon known for founding the Johnson Publishing Company and as owner of Ebony and Jet magazines. His publications gave a voice to black Americans and their unheard stories and experiences. Born of slaves, Johnson’s entrepreneurial spirit and perseverance helped him succeed in spite of his humble, rural beginnings. Among his many honors, Johnson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and was the first African American to be named to Forbes Magazine list of 400 wealthiest Americans. ABOUT THE DELTA HERITAGE TRAIL
The John H. Johnson Park is situated at the trailhead of the Delta Heritage Trail, an 84.5-mile bike and pedestrian trail that weaves through the Arkansas Delta Hardwood forest, miles of rich farmland and oxbow lakes. When completed, the trail will connect Lexa in the north to Arkansas City in the south. The final 40 miles connecting the two completed trail sections are scheduled for completion in 2025 thanks to a $40 million investment split between the Walton Family Foundation and federal grant money. It is expected that the trail will create 600 jobs and add a much-needed spark to local tourism revenue.
